This study aimed to identify the most prominent global university rankings and the criteria they use to evaluate higher education institutions. It also examined the status of Libyan universities within these rankings, namely the Shanghai Ranking, Times Higher Education (THE), QS World University Rankings, and Webometrics. In addition, the study reviewed the main criticisms directed at these global ranking systems. The researcher adopted the descriptive-analytical method to achieve the objectives of the study.
The findings revealed that Libyan universities did not appear in the Shanghai Ranking, while they ranked relatively low in three global rankings: Times Higher Education, QS, and Webometrics. The results also indicated that the University of Tripoli was the first Libyan university to appear in both the THE and QS rankings.
Based on these findings, the study proposed a set of recommendations aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Libyan universities and improving their positions in global university rankings.
